In the lobby

View slide 15 →During the inaugural Hybrid Intelligences program (July 2026), these works from Marlon Barrios Solano’s repertoire of AI pieces were gathered as a showcase: My Pendular Umwelt from the open labs, then the pieces shown on the large screen in the lobby of the Herbert Wertheim Laboratory. They were not a side exhibition. They were chosen as relevant to the concepts and practices the program was rehearsing: coupling, embodiment, latent space, hybrid bodies, and language as a moving field.
The first still is from the Creative B slides: the works as they appeared on the lobby screen. The works then begin with My Pendular Umwelt. Click a work still to open the live piece — or, for Proteans, the video.

Speculative p5.js work from the open labs of the inaugural program. GPT-4o writes from a proposed computational Umwelt and reads aloud; branching pendulums inscribe the words in motion — a Latentwelt of tokens and continuations rather than a still map.

After Richard Brautigan’s 1967 poem: a cybernetic meadow, mammals and computers in mutual grace. An eye that both watches and is written upon — a figure for technical systems that look back, and for the hope (and the unease) of being held by loving machines.

A barely-present body in a generative field. Portrait, glitch, and sung line move through latent space — presence as something that can be looped, solarized, automated, almost not there.

Webcam as coupling. The live body grows other eyes and a span of wing-like lines — an embodied, more-than-human overlay that treats the camera not as a mirror but as a site of hybrid becoming.

We come from the future and want to date you. Synthetic persons speak from a speculative time — profile, voice, and face generated so that “someone for you” might already be a model. Desire, persona, and futurity as AI social form.

Language held in tension: words, embeddings, topology. A speculative map of how syntactic and semantic patterns might form a backbone — not a still dictionary, but a structure that stays up because it is pulled.
